Critical Care Medicine
Critically ill or injured infants, children and teens who need continuous observation and ongoing treatment receive care in Lutheran Children's Hospital pediatric intensive care. The PICU team includes critical care specialists, nurses, child life specialists, social workers, dietitians and other support staff -- all trained to meet the unique needs of young patients requiring advanced care.
Injuries and illnesses treated in pediatric intensive care vary greatly. Examples include:
- Severe asthma
- Diabetic ketoacidosis
- Severe pneumonia
- Traumatic injuries
- Seizures
- Cardiac failure
Pediatric Critical Care Specialists
Lutheran Children's Hospital has pediatric critical care specialists who treat seriously ill infants, children and teens while they are in intensive care. These physicians coordinate each patient's care with an extended team of doctors, nurses and other healthcare specialists.
